Many field investigations have documented the existence of significant spatial variability of the saturated hydraulic conductivity Ks in typical catchments, and several modeling studies have examined the effects of this variability on Hortonian surface runoff. However, these modeling studies had limitations, and some could not deal adequately with possible runoff-run-on phenomena where areas

To prevent algal growth in the soil a light oil instead of water was used. After rainfall intensity exceeds the infiltration capacity of the soil, the Hortonian overland flow hydrographs can be divided into a rainfall excess phase and a recession-infiltration phase. The rainfall excess phase 2007-04-15 · One consequence of reduced infiltrability is an increase in Hortonian overland flow (HOF, caused when rainfall rate exceeds infiltrability and surface storage; Horton, 1933). If the spatial extent of disturbance is great enough, hydrological response is altered from that prior to land-cover conversion (cf. Bruijnzeel, 1990, Bruijnzeel, 2004).

Overland flow, which is examined here, is an important hydrological response to storms of a catchment. And it is also a main component of hillslope hydrology. Through controlling of rainfall intensities and changing of artificial slope angles, 49 overland flow hydrographs are obtained from rainfall-runoff simulation experiments conducted on a manmade hillside.
The prevailing notion that Hortonian overland flow is insignificant on temperate forest hillslopes has been challenged in poorly managed Japanese cypress (hinoki) plantations, due to overstocked stands and poor ground cover. Small (0.5 x 2 m) and hillslope-scale (8 x 25.5 m) runoff plots were established in forested sites of thinned and unthinned hinoki stands and mixed deciduous forests in Hortonian runoff was measured in the laboratory from uniform slopes of lengths of 1·5, 3·0, and 6·0 m for steady, high-intensity rainstorms with durations of 1·0 to 7·5 min. A clear reduction in runoff per unit slope length was found as slope lengths were increased.

To examine factors affecting Hortonian overland flow generation in forested hillslopes, we measured overland flow at plots in Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa), Japanese ceder (Cryptomeria japonica), and broadleaf forests of three study sites (Kochi, Mie, and Tokyo), which had different geology and climate.Overland flow occurred at all plots.
THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS AND MODEL DEVELOPMENTAfter rainfall intensity exceeds the infiltration capacity of the soil, the Hortonian overland flow hydrographs can be divided into a rainfall excess phase and a recession-infiltration phase. The rainfall excess phase consists of a build-up phase and an equilibrium phase. Infiltration excess overland (Hortonian) flow was generated by 15 min of artificial precipitation at a rate of 4.2 mm min-1 which was roughly 2–3 times the saturated soil conductivity. To prevent algal growth in the soil a light oil instead of water was used.
